How do young people learn English best? This is something I think about a lot when teaching foreign languages to young people. I often find that traditional teaching methods cannot stimulate young brains to learn a foreign language.
After moving to southern Italy I was lucky to have had the chance to run a private course teaching English to under 7. I knew children like to sing and enjoy games, so I wanted to use these tools to help my students develop English conversation skills. I found some fun and easy songs online, which they loved. All of them were very interesting and helpful, but students could still not have a basic conversation in English.
I gave 90% of my lessons in English, but I knew it’d be difficult to get them to speak in a foreign language because they didn’t have the learning environment outside our lessons. Therefore, I had to come up with a simple yet useful plan.
One day I prepared a simple dialogue in English, and I got them to sing it rather than repeat it. It worked! You couldn’t imagine how well this worked and how much they enjoyed it. I then realized that coming up with our very own songs was the way to help students start to speak English.
So when I teach English to young people now, I encourage them to make up their own songs to help them remember difficult expressions or sentences. Since I’ve seen this work so well, I’ve now started doing the same with my adult (成人) students to help them remember sentence structures.

It is five years now since I graduate from No. 3 High School. Last Saturday, the class that I was on held a get-together, which took us a long time prepare.
