“这里到底要不要加the?”相信这是大家在书写英文时最常出现的疑惑。

在英文的文法裡有三种冠词(article)分别为a, an, the，而这三种冠词又细分为两种，分别为不定冠词(Indefinite article)a,an以及定冠词(Definite article)the。而在英文文法裡，我们在不定冠词(a,an)的使用上比较没有问题，问题通常出现在定冠词(the)的使用，即便the是英文中最常出现的单字之一，但因为在中文中并没有the这个概念，因此相信大家都有过“这裡到底要不要加the”的困惑。

这时要加the之用法一：

沟通双方都确切的知道所指称的标的为何，且该标的在世界上不是唯一，因此也可说这裡的the有“限定”的作用。

例句

Open the door.

→世界上有多扇门，但我要请你开的那扇门，就是你我所在的空间的那扇门，因此要加the。

Dad, can I borrow the car?

→世界上有很多辆车子，但我要借的那辆车就是属于我们家的那辆车而非其他车，因此要加the。

我们常常在教科书上看到说世界上唯一的东西，要用the，但其实这个说法不太完整，因为仔细想想就可以发现，专有名词也算是世界唯一的东西，但却没有加the，就像Mars (火星)，Venus (金星)，又例如像国家日本(Japen)、韩国(Korea)等等，因此要说世界上唯一的东西前面就要加the是不太妥当的。

The+ 序数/ 最高级/ Only/ same +名词

例句

He is the tallest boy in the class.

→他是我们班上最高的男生。

She is the first student to come here.

→她是第一个来这裡的同学。

这时要加the之用法三：

The + 前面出现过的名词

例句

My uncle has a son and a daughter. The son is a teacher and the daughter is a doctor.

→我的叔叔有一个儿子和一个女儿；儿子是老师，女儿是医生。

这时要加the之用法四：

The + 乐器

例句

Joe plays the piano really well.

→Joe钢琴弹得非常好。

She can play the violin.

→她会拉小提琴。

这时要加the之用法五：

指称一整个系统或者服务。

例句

I heard it on the radio.

→我从广播中得知这件事。

You should tell the police

→你应该告知警察。

The + 形容词 = 複数普通名词(有同一属性的一群人)

例句

The rich are not always happier than the poor.

→富人并不一定比穷人快乐。

She works for a group to help the disabled.

→她为一个专门帮助残障人士的团体服务。

方向；方位

例：the north, the south, the left, the right

以下提及的名称前面要加the

国家名称裡有kingdom, states或republic ex:the United Kingdom; the People’s Republic of China

地理名称ex:the Himalayas; the Atlantic Ocean; the Amazon

书报、杂志ex:The Times; The Bible; The Washington Post

知名建筑或艺术品ex:the Empire State Building;the Mona Lisa

姓氏复数ex:the Obamas; the Jacksons

全体国民 ex: The Chinese; The Americans

这时要加the之用法九：

The + 比较级 + of the two

例句

She is the smarter of the two.

→她是两人中较聪明的一个。

He is the more handsome of the two sons.

→他是两个儿子中比较帅的一个。

By the +计量名词

例句

They are paid by the hour.

→他们是以钟点计酬。

Pencils are sold by the dozen.

→铅笔是按打买卖。
